My “geekdom” spans decades now (a scary thought, right?) but not as many decades as my love for the sport of bowling. Once it grabbed me, bowling has never let go. My interest in computers dates back to early college days, and is probably my second love. The whole technology business is exciting, and I’m not sure what changes more quickly in today’s world: the bowling technology or computer technology.
At any rate, my computer interests quickly entered the realm of the world wide web when it became available to laymen, and www.offthesheet.com was born in 1998. We began as a local bowling news website, covering some of the better scratch leagues and tournaments in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY area. It wasn’t long until I picked up my first client, and what a catch: Parker Bohn III. His website will celebrate its ten-year anniversary in November, 2008.
The marriage of bowling and web design remained a hobby, albeit a very active one, until the past three years, when we decided to take on a few new clients, including Jeff Carter, another exempt PBA player, and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard. It just felt natural to spread our wings into the bowling association and bowling center areas as well. My hope is that I’ll be able to spread those wings even farther, and do so for many years to come.
I live in a very small town in rural Missouri called Longtown, population 78, and do most of my work from my home design studio, which you can see here. Websites come from this place. Websites that can be viewed world wide. Isn’t the virtuality of it all great?

Allen Ahner is a student at Vincennes University in Vincennes, IN, working towards a degree in web design and web development. He’s also a member of Vincennes University bowling team, and fully entrenched in his first season of competition in collegiate bowling. He is one of those kids who can just look at something and pick it up very quickly; hence, the quick aptitude for web design and development.
An “apprentice geek” at age 19, he’s already got three websites up and running that he developed from the ground up, and has been an integral part in the design of numerous others in our stable, especially www.jeffcarterbowling.com. Allen also won a $1,000 website scholarship contest that Vincennes University hosted for high school juniors and seniors the year before entering college, designing a website just for that contest. He’s got a very critical eye and an unmatched attention to detail.
Allen graduated from Jackson High School in Jackson, MO, and lives there when not at college. |
